Week 3: Unknown Bacteria
The last phase of testing on my unknown bacteria is officially complete.. The gelatin was placed in the incubator at 37℃ for five days. After this period I then placed the gelatin in the refrigerator to cool it for 6 hours. The gelatin never solidified. Meaning, the organism was able to break it down. Through the gelatin testing I found the bacteria to be positive for hydrolysis. So through these various methods of testing, the bacteria finally revealed itself, Serratia marcescens. This organism is known to cause common illnesses including respiratory infections and urinary tract infections.

That's some interesting bacteria you found. This lab that we did was interesting. If I wasn't going to school for Applied Computing, I would be doing Microbiology. It's a great field to work in because there's always something new to discover. Nothing ever gets boring because you’re always doing something new.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome! Congrats on completing this unknown project. Learning aseptically techniques and following a set of steps is going to help you a lot in what your next phase is and use everything that you learned and include that in your project for the semester. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI noticed we were getting pretty common unknowns and using pretty similar testing techniques, you were assigned Serratia marcescens. How cool is that? Well cool, because it isn’t currently being isolated from a patient in the Intensive Care Unit. Or worse as a nosocomial infection from elsewhere in a hospital. Thank you for sharing the results of your unknown, I look forward to using the gelatin you reference in this last test. Good luck in the next phase of the program!
